Google Voice started offering IP-telephony services. Calling rate beats Skype by 25% + free US and Canada. For me it means I can save about 50% ($40/mo) over my Skype bill, if I switch to it and if quality/convenience is OK.

Поговорил с домашним телефоном в Украине - качество чуть хуже, чем Скайп, но приемлемо. С мобильным ещё не говорил.

"started"? isn't google voice a fairly old (>2 years) project?

re:quality - I haven't used Skype telephony, but google voice was on par with 'calling cards'. ease of use could have been better.

When Google voice started offering a service to call to external phone numbers from computer? Was it really 2 years ago? I've only noticed it yesterday, despite using google voice for 2 or so years.

hmm, I don't know. I used it at least almost a year ago (I have terrible reception at work, so I do most of my calls with google voice there), and it wasn't anything new thing back then.

according to Wikipedia:
Since August 26, 2010, U.S. and Canadian Gmail users may place calls to the U.S., Canada, and international destinations from within Gmail.

so it is at least 1.5 years old.

Hm... the only usable service is voice call integrated in Gmail talk in Gmail web interface. I've just checked other things:
- Google voice doesn't let you call #s straight from computer, it offres call back. Well even if this feature was available for 1.5 years, it was hardly discoverable and still incnovenient.
- Google talk (desktop app) doesn't support calling external #s.

It's a shame that Google doesn't have consistent strategy RE features. IMHO, all 3 places should have similar interface (and clearly support the same set of features): Google voice, Gmail on the Web, and Google talk.

I can tell you why there is no feature parity with windows app, but first you have to join Google.

OK, then, maybe some other time :)

How about feature disparity between Google Voice and Gmail web interface (chat gadget)? The latter has much more convenient way of calling phones, and in fact, it motivated me to try it and write this post.

didn't really mean it like that, more like "I can tell you, but then I'll have to kill you" kind of deal ;)

Чё-то я не вижу там групп :)

Но эксперименты показывают, что качество Google Voice заметно хуже, чем у Скайпа. Вот как раз на эти самые 25% и уже.
